The rise of live streaming has opened doors for churches to reach a wider audience and connect with members who don’t always attend services in person. But simply streaming your service isn’t enough these days. To truly tap into the power of this technology, churches need to foster interaction and build a thriving online community. Here are 8 tips to turn your live streams from passive viewing experiences into engaging events:

1. Spark Two-Way Communication:

  • Designate a Webhost (Church Online Host): Have a specific person or persons who understand the responsibility of being a host online. They should know how to engage people in chat and have access to all the features and tools the chat platform offers.
  • Harness the Chat: Enable a live chat function and encourage viewers to share their thoughts, ask questions relevant to the sermon, or participate in discussions.
  • Address the Online Viewers: This would be the pastor or speaker’s job at the church during the live service. By recognizing them from the pulpit you send a clear signal that you appreciate them watching online as well as reminding those at the facility you have people outside the 4 walls that matter.
  • Polls and Surveys: Use these interactive tools to gauge audience sentiment on a topic discussed or spark conversation by asking a thought-provoking question.
  • Use Links: Your live chat platform should have the features to add links to give online as well as linking to other important places on the church website that will lead to increase connection for the viewers to the church.
  • Call to Action: Don’t be shy! Prompt viewers to like, share your stream, or subscribe to your channel to stay connected and support your church’s online presence.

2. Build a Digital Community:

  • Be Responsive: Show your viewers you value their participation by responding to comments and messages promptly. This creates a sense of connection and encourages further interaction.
  • Go Behind the Scenes: Offer exclusive content like pre-service interviews with the pastor, sneak peeks at upcoming events, or virtual tours of your church.
  • Connect Beyond the Stream: Online small groups are easier than ever with Zoom and similar platforms. Create online spaces through forums or social media groups for your viewers to interact with each other and discuss the content you share.

3. Make Your Content Captivating:

  • Live Breakaways: When I was the online pastor for my church, we used a digital switcher to switch to me in an office at the church where I would address the online viewers with specific announcements, offerings opportunities, and other topics tailored for those watching the live stream
  • Visual Appeal Matters: High-quality visuals like clear camera angles, engaging graphics, and impactful video snippets keep viewers engaged throughout the stream.
  • Variety is Key: Offer a mix of live services, bible study sessions, interviews, or even pre-recorded worship music videos to cater to different preferences and keep things fresh.
  • Interactive Elements: Private prayer with a church online host is important for those viewing. Other things like polls, virtual Q&A sessions, or even online games inspired by the sermon’s theme. This keeps viewers actively participating and coming back for more.

4. Spread the Word:

  • Promote at Church: It’s important to remind the people at the facility that you are also streaming live. Not only with announcements but also on church newsletters, signs around the church and more.
  • Leverage Social Media: Share links to your live streams on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X. Encourage followers to tune in and share with their friends.
  • Email is Your Friend: Send out reminders and invitations to your existing congregation and even reach out to the wider community to promote your live streams.
  • Partnerships: Collaborate with other churches or faith-based organizations to cross-promote each other’s live streams and expand your online audience.

5. Continuous Improvement:

  • Track Your Data: Use your streaming platform’s analytics to see what kind of content resonates most with viewers, what times of day generate the highest engagement, and where you might have room for improvement.
  • Seek Feedback: Actively solicit feedback from your viewers through polls or surveys. Understanding their preferences and suggestions allows you to tailor your content to their needs.
  • Experiment and Evolve: Don’t be afraid to try new things! Experiment with different formats, interactive elements, and communication strategies to see what keeps your online congregation engaged.
