Stream Smarter: Understanding Your Online Viewers

Streaming video has become an invaluable tool for churches to connect with their congregations and reach new audiences. However, simply broadcasting sermons online isn’t enough. To truly maximize the impact of your online ministry, you need to understand who you’re trying to reach. Our friend Graeme Spencer shares some valuable advice on streaming video. Here are his thoughts on knowing where you are in your streaming strategy.

Defining Your Audience: The Foundation of Successful Streaming

Just like any effective marketing campaign, your streaming strategy must be audience-centric.

  • Identify Your Current Audience: Begin by analyzing your current congregation. Who is already attending in-person services? What are their demographics, interests, and online habits?
  • Clarify Your Target Audience: Who are you hoping to reach with your online ministry? Are you looking to engage younger generations, connect with those who are homebound, or attract new believers?
  • Understand Their Online Habits: Where does your target audience spend their time online? Are they active on social media platforms, do they prefer streaming services, or do they engage with faith-based websites and apps?

Three Types of Audiences: Maintenance, Missional, and Ministry

To further refine your focus, consider these three audience types:

  • Maintenance: These individuals are already actively engaged in your church community. Your online ministry can serve as a valuable supplement to their in-person experience, offering access to past sermons, online Bible studies, and other resources.
  • Missional: This audience represents those who are seeking spiritual growth but may not be actively involved in a church. Your online content can serve as an entry point, offering engaging and informative content that addresses their spiritual needs and questions.
  • Ministry: This audience may be experiencing challenges or difficulties in their lives. Your online ministry can provide a safe and supportive space for them to connect with others, find encouragement, and receive prayer and guidance.
